FROM COSMOS FM TO COSMOS HELLENIC MEDIA

FROM 2 HOURS OF RADIO TO A MULTI FACEDED MEDIA OUTLET

COSMOS FM, New York’s Hellenic Public Radio, began in 1987 as a bold and unlikely experiment on the public FM frequency of the City of New York. At a time when radio remained the most immediate and intimate medium for immigrant communities across the United States, a group of Greek Americans founded the nonprofit GAEPIS (Greek American Educational Public Information System, Inc.) with a clear purpose: to give the Greek diaspora a permanent, dignified, independent voice on the airwaves of America’s largest city.

What started as a humble initiative—just two hours of programming per week—soon proved transformative. Those first two hours resonated deeply with listeners: new immigrants longing for a familiar language, second-generation Greek Americans reconnecting with their roots, elderly members of the community seeking comfort and companionship, and even passers-by on the dial who unexpectedly discovered a vibrant cultural presence. The phone lines lit up. A relationship of trust was born. And a station began to grow.

Over the decades, COSMOS FM evolved into a fully structured radio service with news, cultural programming, interviews, commentary, music, and special segments. What makes this evolution remarkable is that it has been powered overwhelmingly by volunteers—journalists, academics, students, retirees, professionals, and community members who offered their time and skill not for personal gain, but out of love for the Greek language and culture. Their dedication shaped a station that functions as both a community anchor and a cultural bridge.

Today, COSMOS FM is the only Greek radio station broadcasting on a free FM frequency in the New York metropolitan area, a region of nearly 20 million people. Its presence on the FM dial gives the Greek-American community a visibility and legitimacy that few diaspora groups enjoy. From its original two hours, the station now broadcasts 13 hours weekly over FM and operates a 24-hour digital stream, accessible worldwide.

As the media landscape changed, COSMOS FM adapted. The organization expanded into COSMOS Hellenic Media, a multifaceted platform that includes podcasts, vodcasts, and online news, ensuring that Greek voices and stories reach audiences across generations and continents.

Beyond broadcasting, COSMOS FM has served as a living chronicle of Greek-American life for 38 years. It has documented economic crises, waves of new immigration, cultural milestones, community achievements, and the everyday concerns of Greek Americans striving to balance heritage and modern identity. It has offered a platform to those who might otherwise remain unheard and preserved the continuity of Hellenic culture in one of the world’s most diverse cities.

At its core, COSMOS FM represents something timeless: the human need to communicate. This public radio sees itself as part of an ancient lineage—from the orators of the Athenian agora and the village town-criers to the heralds of public life—who, long before microphones and transmitters, carried messages from one to many. Radio amplified that tradition; digital media expanded it to the globe.

What began as a community experiment has become a model of cultural resilience, volunteerism, and independent media. And as long as the Greek voice continues to seek expression, COSMOS FM intends to remain its proud, clear, and enduring echo.
